Before you start scrolling and reading, I just want to say one thing: Yes, there are tons and tons of hair tutorials out there. And yes, you could go read someone else’s and be done. BUT, not everyone does it the same way, not everyone explains it the same way, and not everyone does the little trick I do (keep reading to find out what it is!). So yeah, I know I’m not the first person to invent the blog hair tutorial, but I have tons of hair and am fairly good at styling it, so I thought I’d put my very own curling wand hair tutorial advice out there!

STEP 1 || TEASE THE ROOTS OF YOUR HAIR
Because your hair is susceptible to gravity, your curls will inevitably pull. By teasing your roots, you’re being proactive and giving your hair some body before you have zero “oomph” up top.
Don’t forget to gently comb the top (visible) section after teasing. No one likes seeing that rat’s nest!
STEP 2 || SECTION-OFF YOUR HAIR
I have A LOT of hair, so I have to do mine in 3 sections. Unless you have tons of hair like I do, sectioning it off in 2 sections should be just fine. Why sections? Well, honestly, you can be a little lazier with the bottom section since it’s not directly visible. Then you can spend a little more time on the top section making it look picture perfect!
STEP 3 || WRAP YOUR HAIR AROUND THE BARREL & COUNT TO 5
I pull about 1-inch sections of my hair to wrap around the barrel. I also always have my barrel facing downward (with the cord up top). It gives me a little more freedom when wrapping my hair. Otherwise, my arm and the strand of hair starts to get all caught up in the cord and I’m definitely on track for some wand burns.
I also leave the last inch or so of hair off the barrel (more on that in the next step!). And I’ve found that about 5 seconds gets the job done.
STEP 4 (THIS IS MY SPECIAL TIP!) || USE A STRAIGHTENER TO STRAIGHTEN THE ENDS
Yep, you heard me. Once you have a section finished, use a straightener to straighten the last 1-2 inches of hair. I do this for 2 reasons:
First, when I wrap my hair around the barrel, I leave off about an inch of hair. Inevitably, that last inch of hair is always full of split ends. So without applying any heat to it, my ends look like a hot mess. Applying heat from the straightener chills them out a bit.
Second, because I leave off that inch from the barrel, the end piece usually shoots out like a crazy thing. Straightening it allows the piece to fall directly downward.
STEP 5 || FINISH THE REST OF YOUR BOTTOM SECTION, AND REPEAT FOR YOUR TOP SECTION
Wrap all the pieces from the bottom section and don’t forget to straighten those ends! Repeat for your top section (or sections in my case).
Don’t forget about my straightening tip! Remember how I said sometimes your ends will freak out and go in different directions? Yeah, see below:
But it’s nothing a little straightening action can’t fix!
STEP 6 || ROUGHLY COMB THROUGH YOUR HAIR WITH A COMB OR YOUR FINGERS
I typically use my teasing comb to roughly brush through the straightened ends and then use my fingers to pull apart the curls towards the top of my head. I don’t like my curls to look too perfect, so pulling them apart gives it a little more volume and messy-ness!
STEP 7 || SPRAY IT DOWN
After all your hard work, you’re going to want it to stay! Spray, spray, spray!
STEP 8 || REDO THOSE BANGS
I’m assuming I’m not alone in this, but my bangs hate me and they never do what I want them to do. So after I’m totally “finished”, I go back and give them a little extra love. I typically play around with where I want the bang curl to fall. Once I get it in the right position, I pull it apart a little with my finger (so it’s not just this huge random curl on the side of my face), and spray the heck out of it so it stays!
And viola! You’ve got yourself some nice lookin’ curling wand locks!
Did you learn anything new from this curling wand hair tutorial? Or, better yet, do you have any other tips that I missed? I’d love to hear your thoughts and even some recommendations for other hair tutorials that I should do! Let me know in the comments!
