It’s been a while since I’ve done a hair tutorial, so I thought I’d come back strong with one of my most requested tutorials – my everyday wavy hair tutorial!
In the past, I’ve done a Loose Curls Tutorial as well as a Curling Wand Hair Tutorial, and even though all of these sound similar, they’re actually pretty different. I only do the soft, loose curls when I’m wanting to feel a bit glamorous, and I only use my curling wand when I have lots of time on my hands because I have a ton of hair and that’s the most time-consuming hairstyle for me. This wavy hair tutorial that I’m sharing today is super simple and only takes me about 10 minutes!
Below, I’m walking you through my exact routine, giving any “pro tips” that I’ve learned along the way, and linking all of the products I use to achieve my everyday waves!

First things first, I usually let my hair air dry about 90% of the way and then I put this thermal styling spray in my hair and blow dry it at night. Before I get into bed, I spray this keratin oil on the ends of my hair (it smells absolutely amazing!) just to keep my hair healthy, soft, and shiny!
Below is what my blank-slate-hair looks like in the morning. Before I start styling, I typically add a little dry shampoo to my roots to give my hair a little volume. This dry shampoo is my budget-friendly favorite, but if you’re interested in learning more about dry shampoos in general, be sure to check out my Dry Shampoo post where I reviewed 13 different brands!
STEP 1 || Section off your hair. I section mine off into two sections: top and bottom. So I use a big clip to pin up the top section of my hair so I can focus on curling the bottom half first.
STEP 2 || Use a 1 1/4 inch curling iron to curl sections of your hair. I bought this curling iron after my hair stylist recommended it, and I love it! It’s only $35 and works incredibly well.
I generally grab sections that are about 1 inch by 1 inch. Also, if you take a look at the photo below, you’ll see that I leave out the last inch of my hair. Not curling this section will give your hair a more natural, wavy look instead of having perfect-looking, structured curls.
Pro tip: Always curl your hair away from your face.
STEP 3 || Use a straightener to straighten the ends of your hair. I ordered this straightener off Amazon and it’s fabulous! While I left the bottom inch of my hair out of the curling iron, I still run a straightener through it. The heat helps smooth out any frizz and tames any pieces that are going in crazy directions.
STEP 4 || Spray the bottom half of your hair with hairspray to help lock in those curls. I’ve been using this hairspray for years and it’s still my absolute favorite!
STEP 5 || Move on to the top section of your hair. Here, I’m doing my top right section first.
Remember to curl away from your face and to leave out the bottom inch of your hair!
STEP 6 || Straighten those ends!
STEP 7 || Hairspray!
STEP 8 || Repeat the curling process for the last section of your hair.
STEP 9 & 10 || Straighten the ends & hairspray those curls.
Below is the look you’ll end up with. While it looks good, this isn’t the final product because these curls are still a little too structured for me. So…
STEP 11 || Use your fingers to comb through your hair and separate those curls a bit.
As you can see, this separated the curls a little bit. However, these curls are a little too “soft” for my taste and I like to add a little extra texture…
STEP 12 || Use texturizing spray throughout your hair to create volume and texture. This spray has been my favorite lately! I spray it throughout my hair and pull apart sections of my hair (shown below) so that my waves look a little more “piece-y” and carefree. I also kind of fluff up my hair a bit because I like the messier, teased look with this hairstyle (instead of having perfect curls).
Right after you use it, your hair is going to be super texturized and voluminous – and that’s fine!
After about 10 minutes, your hair will chill out and settle down. And voilà! The perfect waves for everyday wear.
I really love these waves (hence them being my every day go-to!) because they’re kind of messy and pretty loose, so I don’t have to worry if my hair is perfectly on-point. The most important thing I can stress in this tutorial is not to stress it! The careless, “I just came from the beach” style is part of the overall look and makes maintaining your hair throughout the day very easy!
